Greenheath Farming Company Limited: application made to abstract water

Greenheath Farming Company Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.
The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.
The application is to vary licence serial number 6/33/46/*S/0169/R01 which authorises the abstraction of water from drains in Lakenheath Internal Drainage Board area near Lakenheath.
The variation applied for is to:
- restrict abstraction to the reach between National Grid References TL 71780 85907 and TL 71556 85845, whereas the existing licence covers thirteen linked reaches in the same area;
- change the period when abstraction is permitted from April to October to October to March inclusive;
- increase the annual abstraction limit from 95,272 cubic metres per year to 250,000 cubic metres per year;
- increase the daily abstraction limit from 2,036 cubic metres per day to 4,080 cubic metres per day;
- increase the hourly abstraction limit from 127 cubic metres per hour to 170 cubic metres per hour;
- increase the instantaneous abstraction limit from 35.3 litres per second to 47.222 litres per second;
- change the purpose from ‘spray irrigation’ to ‘Filling a reservoir for subsequent spray irrigation’;
- and to change the means of abstraction from ‘a mobile pump’ to ‘a pump’.
These changes would be to enable the use of a reservoir which the applicant intends to build adjacent to the abstraction reach.
