Greenhouse gas removal methods: technology assessment report

This study provides an assessment and comparison of deployment pathways, costs, impacts on the energy system and barriers to deployment of different greenhouse gas removals (GGRs).

Engineered greenhouse gas removals (GGRs), such as direct air capture, remain at a relatively early stage of development. In order to inform policy decisions, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) requires the latest evidence regarding the costs and deployment potential of each GGR method.

In autumn 2020, we commissioned Element Energy and the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology to update our assessment of the potential for greenhouse gas removal solutions to contribute to net zero and interim carbon budgets and inform the net zero strategy. While the analysis remains illustrative, the study supports the need for a portfolio of GGR methods to reach net zero.
