Reservoir safety management is a process of managing the risk of an uncontrolled release of the contents of a reservoir.
This guide was produced between 2009 and 2013 by a group of experts working alongside the Environment Agency. It provides practical advice and guidance on the use and application of risk analysis, assessment and management for UK reservoirs.
Approach
The risk assessment outlined in this guide is based on a three tier approach, including qualitative and quantitative techniques. Tier 1 uses a qualitative assessment method, which could be applied by anyone familiar with risk assessment. The quantitative methods used in tiers 2 and 3 of this guide are aimed at:
- reservoir owners / undertakers
- consulting engineers
- inspecting engineers
- supervising engineers
This guide is an update to the ‘Interim Guide to Quantitative Risk Assessment for UK Reservoirs’ published in 2004 by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
