Details

Brucella canis is a recognised zoonotic pathogen, but human cases are rarely reported globally.

Since summer 2020 there has been an unexpectedly high number of reports of B. canis infection in dogs, mostly directly imported into the UK from Eastern Europe. To date no confirmed cases of B. canis human infection have been reported following contact with an infected dog in the UK.

This risk statement provides a qualitative description of the current risk to the UK human population and highlights gaps in evidence which prevent a thorough risk assessment being undertaken at this time.
