Multi-drug resistant gonorrhoea in England: an update

Following the first global report of Neisseria gonorrhoeae with high-level resistance to azithromycin and resistance to ceftriaxone in a UK resident [1], two cases of gonorrhoea with resistance to ceftriaxone, azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, penicillin and tetracycline have subsequently been reported in Australia.

In an update to the first report, PHE reminds clinical laboratories to refer all N. gonorrhoeae isolates with resistance to ceftriaxone or azithromycin to the Reference Laboratory in Colindale for confirmation [2]. Related advice is also given for GPs and other health professionals.
