This strategy is designed to communicate Highways England’s approach to improving the environment. Highways England is keen for work with partners to help protect and improve the environment and to develop and implement solutions to environmental challenges.

This is the company’s first Environment Strategy as Highways England and it is intended to promote positive change and to strive for the best possible environmental outcomes.

Through the operation, maintenance and improvement of its roads, Highways England’s aspiration is: ‘a strategic road network working more harmoniously with its surroundings to deliver an improved environment.’

The document Highways England Sustainable Development and Environment Action Plan - Roads Period 1 describes how Highways England will progress the aspirations of their Sustainable Development and Environment Strategies. It describes actions that will enable the company to deliver sustainable development and to help protect and improve the environment.
