In 2011 NNB Generation Company Limited (EDF Energy) applied for 3 environmental permits that it would need to operate its proposed new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point.
The Environment Agency consulted on its proposed decision and draft permits in 2012. They carefully considered all the comments made on their draft decisions. They concluded that they should issue all 3 permits and published the final decision in March 2013.
In June 2022 NNB Generation Company (HPC) Limited applied to change its existing radioactive substances environmental permit for Hinkley Point C nuclear power station. The Environment Agency consulted on the application from 18 July 2022 to 14 August 2022. More than 40 organisations and members of the public responded to the consultation. The permit variation was issued on 6 October 2022.
In December 2022 NNB Generation Company (HPC) Limited applied to change its existing water discharge activity environmental permit for Hinkley Point C nuclear power station. The Environment Agency consulted on the application from 24 January to 2 March 2023 and on the proposed decision and draft permit from 25 April to 25 May 2023. 243 organisations and members of the public responded to the consultation. The permit variation was issued on 31 July 2023.
The Environment Agency considers that the limits and conditions in the permits are suitable to properly protect people and the environment.
