This Ofsted survey report is based on evidence from inspections of history between April 2007 and March 2010 in 166 maintained secondary schools in England.

Part A focuses on the inspection findings in the context of rising standards since the previous report in 2007.

Part B discusses some of the issues facing history teachers. It describes the essential components of effective learning in history.
