HMRC’s aim is for everyone to pay the tax that is legally due, no matter who they are. The department does this in an environment where the collection rate is already high - almost 95% of the tax legally due is paid. Last year alone, HMRC secured just under £628 billion.
This issue briefing sets out the department’s approach to ensuring people pay the right tax, starting from designing the tax system in such a way that it is difficult to get tax wrong, and easy to get it right. The briefing also covers how HMRC identifies and responds to risk in the tax system.
