Information on outcome of the Hong Kong British National (Overseas) Welcome Programme Voluntary Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) Year 4 funding (2024/2025).

Introduction

In March 2024, the department announced its fourth year of funding for the  UK-wide Welcome Programme to support BN(O) status holders. This includes grant funding for civil society organisations to deliver projects focusing on the 2 priority areas of (a) employability and (b) mental health and wellbeing.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

Organisation: Barnardo’s

Funding: £269,594

Summary of project:

Barnardo’s are delighted to announce their service supporting Hongkongers with their mental health and wellbeing. The service will build on the support offer that was available in Years 1-3 of Hong Kong British National (Overseas) Welcome Programme.

The service will deliver;

  • Helpline support offering advice and emotional support via telephone and email
  • therapeutic support for children and adults, including couples counselling
  • a virtual Youth Space for children age 10-13 and 14-17
  • regional Peer support networks
  • Virtual Family Space resources - This online resource in Cantonese contains information on a range of topics which are particularly aimed at the challenges encountered by families
  • monthly webinars with a focus on mental health and wellbeing
  • 4 in person events across England
  • volunteering opportunities for Hongkongers

Employability Funding

Organisation:  The Growth Company (Jobs for Hongkongers Initiative)

Funding: £519,960

Summary of project:

“Jobs for Hongkongers” is an initiative delivered nationally by The Growth Company (a non-for-profit social enterprise based in Manchester) – and our partners - Groundwork UK & Migrant and Refugee Centre.

The aim of the initiative is to support Hong Kong BN(O) visa holders find sustainable & meaningful employment through the delivery of an 8-week course designed to improve their employability. This course will be delivered virtually/remotely and in Cantonese, allowing everyone who needs support to be able to access it.

All Hong Kong BN(O) visa holders who enrol on the course will be given a dedicated 1-1 Cantonese speaking Key Worker who will offer them information, advice and guidance in CV writing, effective strategies for job searching in the UK, identifying priority sectors, mock job interviews etc… through weekly meetings.

The course will also support participants to improve their English through informal online ESOL conversation cafes and regular in-person meet-up events.
