In June 2015 the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) submitted to Government a network of draft Special Area of Conservation (dSAC) sites for consideration as sites to be designated for harbour porpoise. One of the sites consulted on was the then Southern North Sea pSAC. The site was formally adopted as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) on 12 December 2017 and formally designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) in February 2019.

The Secretary of State (SoS) for the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) alongside the MMO has undertaken a review, known as the Review of Consents (RoC), in respect of offshore wind farms consented under the Planning Act 2008, Electricity Act 1989 and the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009 that may cause a significant effect on the Southern North Sea (SNS) SAC.

The MMO has now completed its consideration of the RoC decision and has made the decision to impose a condition onto the relevant deemed marine licences (DMLs) after adopting the conclusion of the RoC Habitat Regulations Assessment (HRA). This will necessitate a Site Integrity Plan (SIP) being submitted to, and approved by, the MMO before the commencement of construction activities that could affect the integrity of the SNS SAC.
