Government response to the Shimmer Estate housing market review, July 2017
Published 17 July 2017
The Department for Transport is grateful to Carter Jonas for the detailed work they have done in producing this report.
The report tells us that the particular circumstance of the Shimmer Estate development could mean that the statutory compensation package may not allow homeowners to acquire a similar property in the local area. The report recommends to government that a strategic re-housing plan is developed through consultation with the residents of the Shimmer Estate.
In light of the report’s findings, the government and HS2 Ltd will work with residents and other local stakeholders including representatives from Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, the local Member of Parliament, Rt Hon Ed Miliband, and other local councillors, to ensure Shimmer homeowners can secure a comparable local home.
This support will form part of the wider package of assistance available to residents of the Shimmer estate, and will reflect existing published government guidance. It is anticipated that a scheme could be made available in the autumn.
This additional support would complement the statutory compensation package already available to those whose homes are acquired by the government who would receive the ‘unblighted’ market value of their home, plus 10% of the value of the property, plus reasonable costs.
On 29 June, it was announced that those owner-occupiers wishing to remain in their home rather than sell their property to the government can elect to receive a cash payment of £30,000.
We trust that the full package of support which will be on offer to Shimmer residents will give those affected choices about their futures, and help them remain in their local community.
