Details
Government has taken a strategic policy decision to support blending of up to 20% hydrogen by volume into GB gas distribution networks. This is a summary of the strategic policy decision and next steps:
- based on current evidence, we see potential strategic and economic value in supporting the blending of up to 20% hydrogen by volume into the GB gas distribution networks in certain circumstances that align with blending’s strategic role
- industry trials to gather evidence to demonstrate whether blending can be used safely in the GB gas distribution networks are ongoing. This evidence needs to be assessed by government before any steps to implement blending are taken
- following completion of the safety assessment, government will take a decision on whether to enable blending into the GB gas distribution networks. This decision will consider any implications from the safety assessment on blending’s feasibility and economic case
Further details, such as policy positions on the implementation of blending into the GB gas distribution networks, if blending is enabled, are set out in the strategic policy decision document.
We have published this alongside the government response to the consultation on hydrogen blending into GB gas distribution networks.
