On 9 June 2022, the UK hosted Japan for the first Financial Regulatory Forum.

To build on the arrangements for regulatory cooperation outlined in Annex 8-A of the UK-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, HM Treasury and Japan’s Financial Services Agency signed an Exchange of Letters formally establishing the Financial Regulatory Forum and setting out how the parties would use the forum to progress their shared priorities for financial services.

This includes provisions for the exchange of information, consultation, deference, technical mediation and cooperation on diversity in finance, sustainable finance and other emerging issues.

The UK and Japan agreed to set up working groups to support closer cooperation on areas of mutual interest, including public-private partnerships in insurance, sustainable finance and financial innovation.

The UK and Japan also discussed their approaches for supporting international firms to access their markets, cross-border data flows, diversity in financial services and opportunities in the insurance, asset management and FinTech sectors.
