Marriage certificates issued in India used as supporting document for passport application purposes
Published 16 May 2014
Marriage certificates issued by Local Authorities in India may be accepted for passport purposes provided that they are contemporaneous (i.e issued at the time of the marriage) and can be checked as genuinely issued by the Local Authority concerned.
However, since the Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act 2005 all marriages in India have to be registered with the Indian authorities for marriages to be legally approved. HM Passport Office require evidence that a marriage has been registered with the Indian authorities if the marriage took place after the 2005 Act came into force.
