Hydrogen heating industrial equipment manufacturers survey: privacy notice

This notice sets out how we will use your personal data, and your rights, when you complete the Hydrogen heating: industrial equipment manufacturers’ survey.
It is made under Articles 13 and/or 14 of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR).
Your data
We will process the following personal data.
For the person filling out the questionnaire on hydrogen on behalf of their company, we will collect:
- name of the person
- role description (technical / engineer, finance, management, business communication, sales and marketing, other)
- work email address
Purpose
Personal data
The personal data will be used to enable further engagement with industrial equipment manufacturers for the purpose of:
- understanding the feasibility of using hydrogen across industrial users
- scoping potential work items
- to flag DESNZ work that might be of interest to manufacturers
The personal data provided will be available to DESNZ employees who have a business need to contact the company on the basis of the responses given. Within the survey there is a question ‘Are you happy to share your contact details for the purpose of DESNZ following up on information given in the questionnaire?’ The responses given to this question will determine whether the personal information collected earlier is used for this purpose.
Non-personal data information
Any commercial information you provide will be held in confidence and used for research purposes and to plan and scope the next phases of work. The data will not be shared outside the DESNZ Industrial and Hydrogen Teams and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The HSE is working with DESNZ to provide technical and regulatory advice of the strategic decision in 2026. No information gathered from the questionnaire that allows individual businesses to be identified will be made public.
Legal basis of processing
(a) Consent: You indicate your consent or otherwise to us processing your personal information, through the following question: ‘Are you happy to share your contact details for the purpose of DESNZ following up on information given in the questionnaire?’ . If you agree to share your personal information this will enable us to engage with you about your company’s thoughts and plans regarding Hydrogen and Fuel Switching.

(e) Public task: Processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority vested in the data controller, such as the exercise of a function of the Crown, a Minister of the Crown, or a government department; the exercise of a function conferred on a person by an enactment; the exercise of a function of either House of Parliament; or the administration of justice.
The task is to produce evidence on the safety, feasibility and cost of using Hydrogen in Industry ahead of a policy decision in 2026 on the strategic role of Hydrogen for Heating that will inform decisions about the natural gas grid.
Recipients
Your personal data will not be shared outside of DESNZ.
Retention
Your personal data will be kept by us for duration of the Hydrogen Heating Programme (expected to conclude in 2026).
Automated decision making
Your personal data will not be subject to automated decision making.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- request information about how your personal data are processed, and to request a copy of that personal data
- request that any inaccuracies in your personal data are rectified without delay
- request that any incomplete personal data are completed, including by means of a supplementary statement
- request that your personal data are erased if there is no longer a justification for them to be processed
- in certain circumstances (for example, where accuracy is contested) request that the processing of your personal data is restricted
- object to the processing of your personal data where it is processed for direct marketing purposes
- object to the processing of your personal data

International transfers
Your personal data will be processed in the UK.
However, as your personal data is stored on our IT infrastructure and shared with our data processors Microsoft and Amazon Web Services, it may be transferred and stored securely in the UK and European Economic Area (EEA). Where it is the case that your personal data is stored outside the UK and EEA it will be subject to equivalent legal protection through the use of Model Contract Clauses.
Complaints
If you consider that your personal data has been misused or mishandled, you may make a complaint to the Information Commissioner, who is an independent regulator. The Information Commissioner can be contacted at:
