Industrial Fuel Switching Competition Phase 2: demonstration projects (closed to applications)
Funding for the development and demonstration of fuel switching and fuel switch enabling solutions, to help industry move to lower carbon fuels.
Documents
Details
The Industrial Fuel Switching (IFS) Competition aims to support the development of fuel switching and fuel switch enabling technologies for UK industry. This includes fuel switches from high carbon fuels to hydrogen, electricity, biomass, and other low carbon fuels.
Phase 2 provides up to £49.4 million in funding with £1 million to £6 million available per project.
Funding will be awarded through Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) contracts, providing 100% funding for pre-commercial solutions.
Funding is divided into 3 lots:
- fuel switch and fuel switch enabling technologies for hydrogen
- fuel switch and fuel switch enabling technologies for electrification
- fuel switch and fuel switch enabling technologies for biomass, wastes, and other net zero compatible fuels
Eligibility
Phase 2 was open to all industrial sectors and fuel switching technology developers, whether or not they took part in Phase 1.
It supports fuel switch and fuel switch enabling technologies at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4 to 7 at the start of the project.

KTN’s online matchmaking platform ‘meeting mojo’ is open for prospective Phase 2 applicants to find suitable partners or collaborators.
Background
The Industrial Fuel Switching (IFS) Competition of up to £55 million forms part of the BEIS Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP). NZIP aims to accelerate the commercialisation of innovative clean energy technologies and processes through the 2020s and 2030s. Switching industry to lower carbon fuels will be critical for meeting the UK’s legally binding commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2050.
Phase 1: Feasibility studies is closed to applications. 21 projects were awarded between £50,000 and £300,000 funding per project under Phase 1, covering hydrogen, electrification and other low carbon fuel switching technologies.
