Dear
Re: Request for information from the Insolvency Service
Thank you for your email of 07/03/2022. In your correspondence you requested statistics on the causes of compulsory liquidations from the Insolvency Service.
You request has been dealt with under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
I can confirm that the agency holds the information that you have requested and it is provided in a summary table at Annex A. For further information see the notes page on our previous publication on liquidation causes. https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/ad-hoc-statistics-on-causes-of-compulsory-liquidations
Annex A contains a single table that gives a breakdown of causes of liquidation by quarter from Q2 2017 to Q4 2021. Causes of liquidation for compulsory liquidation are as recorded in the Insolvency Service’s administrative database
Please note that due to different extraction dates from a live administrative system, the overall totals do not exactly match our published quarterly Insolvency Statistics. They also do not align with our previously published statistics on this topic. This is likely due to methodology changes in the way we identify duplicate records, where multiple liquidations are recorded for the same company.
Cases that are classified as unknown or null at one time may be re-categorised later into another of the causes categories. Therefore, totals for each category may not match the previously published statistics and totals for the unknown column in the provided table may be subject to changes in the future.
If you are not satisfied with the response we have provided you and would like us to reconsider our decision by way of an internal review (IR), please contact our Information Governance team at foi@insolvency.gov.uk or by post at:

You also have the right to contact the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) if you wish for them to investigate any complaint you may have in regards to our handling of your request. However, please note that the ICO is likely to expect an IR to have been completed in the first instance.
Kind regards
