Details

This resource is for local leaders who want to tackle the root causes of violence and change behaviours that lead to violence. These include:

  • the police
  • health and wellbeing boards
  • local authorities (including public health, children’s services and education)
  • community safety partnerships
  • local safeguarding children boards
  • clinical commissioning groups
  • voluntary sector services

They can use this resource to find evidence and information about implementing bystander interventions. These are interventions that empower people to become active bystanders, by taking them through the different stages needed to move from inaction to action. They equip people with the skills to recognise and respond to problematic attitudes and behaviours that contribute to a culture where violence occurs.

The resource includes definitions, a PHE evidence review of bystander interventions, detailed case studies of 4 different bystander interventions, and links to further resources, including PHE’s preventing serious violence resource.
