Abe can credibly claim to have delivered an economic recovery. But some commentators see high government debt, falling real wages, inflexible labour markets and the risk of a further tax shock all presenting significant risks. They believe that structural reform, supported by deregulation and an open trade policy, will be key to mitigating them and placing Japan on a higher growth path.
