About JDR

The Joint European Torus (JET) is the world’s largest magnetic fusion experiment and is still at the forefront of fusion research and is closely involved in testing plasma physics, systems, and materials for ITER. The UK has a huge opportunity to become a global exporter of fusion technology capturing the full lifecycle of a fusion power plant, UKAEA continues to create jobs and drive economic growth in fusion-focused and adjacent fields, while helping to keep the country at the forefront of the international scientific community.

Over 40 years of service, JET has delivered ground-breaking research and innovation and will continue to do so through its remaining 2022 & 2023 test campaigns. At the end of 2023, JET will come to the end of its final test campaign and will move into the next phase of its contribution to the development of fusion technology.

The JET decommissioning and repurposing programme will help define the full life cycle of a fusion power plant and will continue to provide ground-breaking research and innovation. It will help define the requirements for the safe and ethical delivery of fusion decommissioning and repurposing.

The JDR programme is in the early stages of development and is currently moving forwards to Outline Business Case (OBC) submission to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) in 2023.
