Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Delivery Group

Objective: To provide advice on how government and industry can work together to establish UK production facilities and accelerate the delivery of the fuel to market.

SAF mandate

• feed into scope of second consultation on SAF mandate (between January and February 2023)
• SAF mandate second consultation launched (March 2023)

• assessing potential mechanisms to secure a long-term UK SAF industry (between January and December 2023)

• publish independent review on development of a UK SAF industry (April 2023)

SAF production

Zero Emission Flight (ZEF) Delivery Group

Objective: To provide advice on how government and industry can work together to best accelerate the adoption of zero emission flight and put the UK in a leading position in the race to achieve zero emission flight.

ZEF commercialisation

• develop and publish long term milestones for whole ZEF system to 2050 and beyond – infrastructure, hydrogen and electricity demand, technology and regulation, building on Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) market intelligence and strategy (between March and September 2023)
• highlight factors and potential market measures to influence commercialisation of ZEF (between April and September 2023)
• propose measures and bring forward programmes required to commercialise ZEF, and review need for dedicated commercialisation subgroup in ZEF Delivery Group (between September 2023 and December 2024)

• advise on investment opportunities for further R&D on airport readiness for ZEF (between May and October 2023)
• estimate potential aircraft and infrastructure hydrogen leakage and suggest mitigations (between October 2023 and April 2024)
• potential relevant activity outside of the ZEF Delivery Group: airport infrastructure research and development (From October 2023 onwards)
• inform the case for future convergence of an aerospace and airport infrastructure centre(s) (between May and December 2024)
• review impact of airport infrastructure R&D to recommend any further need (between August and December 2024)

Department for Transport (DfT) call for evidence on 2040 domestic net zero aviation

• feed into DfT call for evidence on 2040 domestic net zero aviation (between July and December 2023)

Regulation

• regulatory landscape review and gap analysis (between January and July 2023)
• plan and engage with industry and UK and international regulatory bodies to address priority areas of focus (between July and December 2023)
• define UK certification programme for hydrogen powered large commercial air transport (between January and October 2024)
• international regulation engagement priorities identified (from October 2024 onwards)
• activity delivered outside the ZEF Delivery Group: Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Cranfield and ZeroAvia, permit to fly testing regime and certification plan (between March 2023 and December 2024)
