Leeds City Council: application made to impound water

Leeds City Council has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.
The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.
The application is for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of the River Aire at National Grid Reference SE 21460 37810 by way of a flood defence structure with two hydraulically operated gates. The gates will operate when flows in the River Aire reach approximately 320 cubic metres per second. The impounded water will flood over floodplains at Calverley, creating a temporary flood storage area. The water will be released back into the River Aire in a controlled manner.
The capacity of the flood storage area at overflow level will be 273,000 cubic metres.
