Dear Fraser,
Thank you for your letter of 15 July raising a number of topical issues about surveillance cameras.
As you say these important issues cover other departments’ and bodies’ responsibilities. I will be very happy to discuss them when we next meet, in particular how to encourage departments to improve their management of CCTV systems, but suggest that in the meantime you discuss with officials here.
As you know we have just received approval for a statutory consultation on the Code. That approval was based on the version which, in line with our commitment to simplify current arrangements, removes unnecessary text and updates references to other legislation and key judgments, but does not impose any new impacts. Seeking to address those wider issues and extend the list of relevant bodies would likely involve considerable debate, and I would not want to have to start that process again at this late stage.
