In May 2024, the Council for Science and Technology (CST) provided advice to the Prime Minister on how the government can strengthen action to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The advice recommends five areas for the UK government to prioritise to address the AMR emergency:

  1. Strengthening international cooperation
  2. Incentivising antimicrobial R&D for new treatments
  3. Investing in diagnostics
  4. Developing skills and building capacity
  5. Increasing public engagement
