To support the government’s long-term plan for housing, the Secretary of State has sent a letter to all local planning authorities in England.

In July 2023, the Secretary of State set out the government’s long-term plan for housing.

Local government plays a key role in delivering this plan and building more homes in the right places. To highlight the principal elements of the long-term plan that relate to local government, the Secretary of State sent a letter to all council leaders, chief executives and other local planning authorities in England on 8 September 2023.

This letter set out how government intends to support this ambition, by introducing reforms to make plans simpler, shorter and faster to prepare, alongside initiatives aimed at bolstering capacity and capability. The letter reiterates the critical importance of local authorities adopting their ambitious local plans in a timely manner.
