For each of the 55 towns announced in the first tranche of the Long-Term Plan for Towns, the Department for Levelling Up’s Spatial Data Unit, in collaboration with the Office for National Statistics, have developed a set of tailored data packs. This brings together previously published publicly available data for the first time for local residents.
Through the Levelling Up Subnational Data Project, metrics have been derived at town level from publicly available data, where this data was not previously available at this geography. Data that could not be derived has been published in these additional tables by ONS. The data packs primarily use metrics and indicators across the 3 priorities of the programme: safety and security, high streets and heritage; and transport and connectivity. This publication of the data packs will support the delivery of Town Boards and ensure communities are empowered to develop solutions that work for them.
The data packs define a town’s boundary based on the definition of built up areas: 2022 for English and Welsh towns and localities; 2020 for Scottish towns. The default boundaries set out in the data packs are provisional and amendable in the context of the programme, and are not confirmed until agreed by the respective Towns Board and agreed with the department. Any requested amendment must remain within the spirit of the programme and should include, as part of the revised area, the town boundary that was originally selected.
