This prison service instruction (PSI) describes how prisons should be managed at night when prisoners are locked in their cells (known as night state).
It includes guidance on:
- preparing to enter night state, including key and radio checks
- arrangements for ‘at risk’ prisoners
- management of incidents and procedures for opening cells
- coming out of night state
This is a current PSI. It came into effect on 2 May 2011.
