Public Health England, on the government’s behalf, reviewed the UK’s approach to regulating radioactive liquid discharges, particularly those containing very low levels of radionuclides, to ensure that it is fit for purpose. Feedback from industries and organisations generating radioactive waste and data on how other countries deal with liquids were collected.
The review found that the UK’s regulatory system reflects international standards, requirements and best practice but recommendations were made to address evidence of some disproportionate requirements for radioactive liquid discharges at very low concentrations.
The recommendations are intended to inform government and environmental regulators who have responsibility for the safe regulation of radioactive liquids.
