Import of sea bird guano for use as manure or soil improver - Import Information Note (IIN) ABP/21

1. General information 

This Import Information Note (IIN) must be read in conjunction with the IIN for general information for imports of animal by-products (ABPs), which provides information on pre-notifications, veterinary checks, risk categories and more.

2. Scope

Import requirements for sea bird guano for use as manure or soil improver. 

Guano is defined in Regulation (EU) 142/2011 as a natural product which has been collected from the excrements of wild sea birds and which is not mineralised. 

As stated in Article 22 point 2 of Regulation (EU) 142/2011 the importation of guano from wild sea birds is not subject to any health conditions. 

3. Country of origin 

Imports are permitted from any country. 

4. Health certification or documentation 

There is no requirement for health certification, but it is recommended that the consignment is accompanied by a commercial invoice/commercial documentation for traceability purposes.
