Response
Teacher quality is at the heart of a high-performing education system. The NCTL manages a teacher recruitment marketing campaign to contribute to the Secretary of State’s objective to attract high-quality graduates into the teaching profession, something which is crucial to pupils’ performance. The evidence suggests the NCTL is successfully attracting a higher calibre of applicants. In the initial teacher training 2012 census summary, the NCTL published data showing the overall proportion of trainees with a 2:1 or higher was 71%. This is a rise of 6 percentage points on the same result in 2011. Full details of the census are available. The NCTL has not yet published any data for the 2012 to 2013 academic year.
