Details

The Media Act has become law after receiving Royal Assent shortly before the 2024 General Election. For the most up to date version of the Act and accompanying explanatory notes please visit the Media Act page on legislation.co.uk.

The Media Bill will make long-term changes to ensure viewers and listeners across the UK can continue to access public service television and radio content as technology changes.

The Bill will deliver the manifesto commitment to repeal Section 40 of the Crime and Courts Act 2013 which, if commenced, could have a chilling effect on the freedom of the press.

The Media Bill was published in draft in March 2023 and underwent a period of pre-legislative scrutiny by the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee.

All the impact assessments have been reviewed by the Regulatory Policy Committee and assessed as fit for purpose.  Details of their assessment can be found at RPC Opinions.
