DESNZ commissioned the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) to undertake research to improve understanding of methane emissions from Anaerobic Digestion (AD) sites.

NPL surveyed 7 AD sites to better understand the potential sources of methane emissions and the magnitude of those emissions. Different techniques were used for both short and long-term monitoring of emissions, predominantly relying on Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL).

This research improves the evidence base on fugitive methane emissions location and magnitude and will help inform future policy.
