Examines the methods used for the last two student income and expenditure surveys (SIESs) and how feasible alternative approaches would be. Looks at current thinking, knowledge and experience of relevant student finance surveys, makes recommendations for the next planned round of SIES (expected in 2011/12). Covers on sampling and contacting students, response rates, data collection, data linking, and likely implications of any methodological changes on the ability to measure trends over time.
