This is a notice to all shipowners, masters, seafarers, skippers, ship managers and shipbuilders.

This marine guidance note provides clarification and guidance on the merchant shipping (safety of navigation) regulations 2020 (S.I. 2020/0673) which implement chapter V of the International Convention for the safety of life at sea 1974 (SOLAS) in its most recently amended form into UK law.

Future amendments to chapter V will be incorporated into UK law by way of ambulatory reference. The 2020 regulations revoke the merchant shipping (safety of navigation) regulations 2002 (S.I. 2002/1473).

This marine guidance note replaces online guidance previously provided by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) on SOLAS chapter V and should be read in conjunction with the merchant shipping (safety of navigation) regulations 2020.
