Agenda item 1 – Welcome and introductions
1. Brian Bell opened the meeting and welcomed attendees and a new starter in the secretariat who joined the Devolved Nations team.
Agenda item 2 – Exploitation and migrant workers
2. Focus on Labour Exploitation (FLEX) gave a presentation on their research into labour market exploitation and took questions from the committee and secretariat.
Agenda item 3 – Home Office, MAC Secretariat and MAC updates
3. Della Mcvay gave an update on Home Office business. She provided an update on progress made on schemes supporting Ukraine migrants and, on the nationality, and borders act which received royal assent.
4. Toby Nutley welcomed the new secretariat member and thanked everyone for the social care report. Toby gave an update on HMRC data, there are no longer any barriers to receiving this data.
5. Brian Bell gave an update about a conference he attended on the impacts of training in the UK since 2002- since the joining of new EU member countries. There is evidence that there has been a reduction in British workers getting NVQ levels particularly older workers since 2002.
Agenda item 4 – Annual report: exploitation
6. The secretariat discussed an outline for a proposed chapter on exploitation for the annual report and asked the committee for comments.
Agenda item 5 – Annual report: impact on wages
7. The secretariat discussed a paper which explored the impact of wages since the ending of free movement and asked the committee for comments.
Agenda item 6 – Social care report: post launch feedback
8. The secretariat provided an update on the press launch from the social care report of media coverage.
Agenda item 7 – Devolved nations quarterly pack
9. The secretariat highlighted points which came across from stakeholder engagement in meetings with devolved nations. The secretariat asked for feedback on the content of their paper and agenda/workplan.
Agenda item 8 – Future research programme
10. The secretariat set out options for future qualitative research this year and where it can feed into work such as the annual report. The committee were asked for comments.
