MIN 542 (M+F) Amendment 2 Life saving appliances – recognised distress signals and advertised alternatives to pyrotechnic flares

Notice to all Ship Owners, Ship Operators, Port Operators, Harbour Masters, Yacht Skippers, Pleasure Vessel Users, Masters and owners of vessels operating on Inland Waterways, Fishing Vessel Skippers and Seafarers.

This note replaces MIN 542 Amendment 1 and MIN 464 and should be read in conjunction with MGN 280 and MGN 599.

This MIN highlights the risks of using non-SOLAS or non-pyrotechnic distress flares such as Electronic Visual Distress Signals (EVDS). MIN 542 Amendment 1 expired on the 1 March 2022, this amendment (2) has been issued solely to extend the expiration date. This MIN (Amendment 2) expires 01 March 2027.
