Amendment 2 extends the expiry date only and does not alter any content.

This notice expires 22nd March 2024.

1. Introduction

1.1 Following the implementation of the merchant shipping and fishing vessels (control of vibration at work) regulations 2007 (S.I. 2007/3077), and the merchant shipping and fishing vessels (control of noise at work) regulations 2007 (S.I. 2007/3075), the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) produced for industry three codes which provide guidance and interpretation of the requirements in order to comply with the regulations. These are:

  • code of practice for controlling risks due to noise on ships
  • code of practice for controlling hand transmitted vibration on ships
  • code of practice for controlling risks due to whole body vibration on ships

1.2 Those primarily affected by noise and vibration regulations will be operators and managers of ships and fishing vessels and other marine craft, including yachts, work boats etc. registered in the UK on which workers are employed. The regulations will apply also to charities and similar organisations that operate vessels, but only when there are workers on such vessels.

1.3 The codes of practice are intended to assist those concerned with designing, building and owning or managing ships to comply with the merchant shipping and fishing vessels (control of vibration at work) regulations 2007 and the merchant shipping and fishing vessels (control of noise at work) regulations 2007.

1.4 The codes of practice collectively deal with:

  • the assessment of risk from noise and vibration onboard ships
  • the measurement and evaluation of noise and vibration
  • the assessment of the severity of exposures to noise and vibration
  • the identification of controls to eliminate or reduce exposures to noise and vibration
  • the involvement of crew members in the control of noise and vibration risks including the provision of training and
  • the provision of health monitoring and surveillance for noise and vibration.
