1. Introduction/Background
1.1 An explanation of how to determine scantlings, in respect to intermediate values, from the tables, in the Standards for Vessels Less Than 15 metres Length Overall (and from the tables in the Construction standards for Fishing Vessels 15 metres Length Overall to 24 metres Registered Length was issued by Seafish on 1st December 2015. Details of that explanation are provided below.
1.2 As of 21st July 2020, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) will undertake the survey of new building fishing vessels of less than 24m registered length to Fishing Vessel Construction and Outfit Standards, following the decision of Seafish to cease undertaking this work.
1.3 As part of a smooth transition, the MCA will continue to implement the amendments and explanations announced by Seafish via their SFIN (Seafish Information Note) publications regarding the applicable construction standards. This MIN transfers SFIN 15 into the MCA publication portfolio. 1.4 Where information in this notice contradicts the Seafish Construction Standards, MGN 628 or MGN 629, this notice is to take priority.
2. Use of Scantling Tables
2.1 As of 1st December 2015, the following explanations should have been applied, and continue to be applicable, in relation to determining scantlings from the tables in the Construction Standards for Vessels Less than 15 metres Length Overall, from the tables in the Construction Standards for Fishing Vessels 15 metres length overall to 24 metres Registered Length and from 21st July 2020, to the tables applicable to MGN 628 and MGN 629.
3. Scantling Tables for Steel and Aluminium Construction
3.1 In determining scantlings from the tables in respect of intermediate lengths, breadths and depths, the scantling applicable is to be that given for the next lower dimension, unless stated otherwise in the table notes.
3.2 Where the tables indicate plate thicknesses and scantling sections which are not commercially available the next higher available thickness or scantling is to apply. In such cases, the increased section modulus may be considered in determination of main scantlings.
4. Scantling Tables for GRP Constructions
4.1 In determining scantlings from the tables in respect of intermediate values, the scantling applicable is to be that given for the nearest dimension/numeral, unless otherwise stated in the table notes.
5. Scantling Tables for Wood Construction
5.1 In determining scantlings from the tables in respect of intermediate values, the scantling applicable is to be that given for the nearest dimension/numeral, unless otherwise stated in the table notes.
