Join the Ministry of Defence Police as a Superintendent located within our Headquarters’ at RAF Wyton, where you’ll oversee and manage our Projects Team, Chronicle Team and Control Rooms. Eligibility
Serving police officers and police officers who have recently left policing (within 36 months) are invited to apply.
Applicants seeking substantive recruitment must have served in the rank of Detective Superintendent or higher for a minimum of 12 months.
Applicants should be able to evidence a credible and relevant policing record detailing their investigative experience.
Applicants must be a sole British National and British Passport holder and willing to undergo security vetting clearance. Applicants will also be subject to police vetting at management level.
Applicants will be required to pass a multistage fitness test to level 5.4 (15m test) in line with the National Role Profile fitness level applicable to the role/rank.
Applicants must hold a UK manual driving licence with no more than 6 live penalty points.
Job description
Superintendents lead a large and/or complex area of command within forces and across collaborations, strategic alliances, and partnerships, carrying responsibility for all activities in their area. They may also carry responsibility for strategic or policy lead for one or more areas of policing across the force or organisation.
Superintendents contribute to the development of culture, climate and working processes in their area to ensure adherence to standards, and the promotion of accountability and continuous improvement.
Post holders are also likely to take on an operational specialist role requiring specialist technical knowledge and skills.
Key accountabilities
- Provide leadership and management of Force performance within the HQ portfolio area; reviewing, monitoring and taking appropriate action when deficiencies are identified.
- Strategic liaison with Senior Officers, Stakeholders, and Partners on a day to day to day basis.
- Ensure maintenance of discipline, efficiency, training, welfare and career development of all staff within the HQ portfolio.
- Represent MDP on regional Control Room, Stop & Search, Use of Force meetings.
- Maintain oversight of Operational Systems and ensure effective use across the Force
- Lead the design and implementation of significant organisational change projects and programmes within area of responsibility, in order to drive continuous improvement to in service to defence and best practice in service delivery.
- Provide specialist advice and guidance to team members to ensure that responses are delivered within appropriate policies and legislation and achieve the best possible outcomes.
- Monitor and manage the performance of the team, devising and implementing effective strategies to identify issues and improve team/individual performance to ensure adherence to professional standards and contribute to the achievement of unit/Force objectives.
- Support the assessment of individuals, assessing capabilities and development needs and devising appropriate development plans to enable high performance and potential progression.
- Supervise and monitor the handling of information, intelligence and evidence and record keeping ensuring alignment with legislation, policies and guidance which enables effective law enforcement and the initiation of criminal justice proceedings.
- Contribute to the identification of appropriate internal and external local partners in line with the Force’s planned approach, co-ordinating and monitoring the establishment of effective partnerships to enable progress against community policing objectives.
- Support the review and reporting on team expenditure to ensure the efficient use of available budgets and maximise value for money.
- Identify opportunities for and co-ordinate the exploration of new ways of working and innovation in policing, applying critical thinking to identify solutions to problems in line with evidence based practice within area of responsibility.

Annual leave
All officers receive a minimum of 22 days’ paid annual leave, rising to 30 days a year after 20 years’ service.
You can also expect other forms of leave, including maternity, paternity and adoption leave, special leave (with or without pay) and parental leave.

Pension
Our officers are automatically opted into the Principal Civil Service Pension Scheme (ALPHA). You will contribute between 4.6% and 8.05%, depending on your earnings, with contributions from the MOD at 28.97%.

Sports
We encourage all our staff to keep fit and healthy, and fitness is an operational requirement for officers.
Membership to the CSSC Sports and Leisure is open to all in Defence and provides several ways to stay active as well as savings on gym memberships.
Many stations have gym facilities, and we have a Force sports association that offers support to staff taking part in competitive opportunities. Our officers take part in Police Sport UK initiatives and Defence sporting events, sometimes competing against their colleagues.
