The Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) annual report on the use of the Mental Health Act (MHA) looks at how providers are caring for patients, and whether patients’ rights are being protected.

To inform the report, CQC carries out visits to check how mental health services are providing medical treatment to people detained under the MHA and are supporting patients to recover.

The 2017 to 2018 report shows that at a time of pressure on budgets and rising demand, improvement is still possible in mental health services. Findings from the report show:

  • a general trend of improvement in the areas that CQC has measured
  • concern about the quality and safety of care provided on mental health wards, particularly on acute wards for adults of working age
