Car and passenger vehicles: MOT tester annual training topics from May 2020 to March 2025

This page shows which MOT tester training topics you need to have training records for. The topics you need to study for this year’s assessment are available on MOT tester annual assessment: training topics and sample questions.
This list is split by training years, which were:
- April 2024 to March 2025
- April 2023 to March 2024
- April 2022 to March 2023
- May 2021 to March 2022
- May 2020 to April 2021
Use this list make sure you have the right records.
The start and end date of some training years was affected by COVID-19, which is why some do not start in April.
You and the business you work for can be suspended from MOT testing if you do not keep the right records.
What the record needs to show
Your training record needs to show:
- the MOT annual training year (for example April 2023 to March 2024)
- the date of the training
- how long the training session lasted
- what topics you covered during the session
- notes on what you did, how you did it and what you learned
- what vehicle groups your training covered
- your name and MOT testing service user ID
From 1 April 2024, you must record your training on the MOT testing service. You can only do this between 1 April and 31 March each year.
You also need to keep your own paper or digital records of any training you did between 1 May 2020 and 31 March 2024.
April 2024 to March 2025
The topics you need training records for are:
- corrosion
- classification of vehicles
- MOT test procedures
- the MOT inspection manual for cars and passenger vehicles
You must have recorded your training for this year on the MOT testing service.
April 2023 to March 2024
The topics you need training records for are:
- registering a vehicle for an MOT test
- using MOT testing equipment
- MOT test procedures
- the MOT inspection manual for cars and passenger vehicles
You must have a paper or digital record of your training for this year.
April 2022 to March 2023
The topics you need training records for are:
- brake test procedures
- MOT test procedures
- managing your MOT account/CPD
- the MOT inspection manual for cars and passenger vehicles
You must have a paper or digital record of your training for this year.
May 2021 to March 2022
The topics you need training records for are:
- new vehicle technology
- MOT testing requirements
- corrosion and standards of repair
- the MOT inspection manual for cars and passenger vehicles
You must have a paper or digital record of your training for this year.
May 2020 to April 2021
The topics you need training records for are:
- the requirements for issuing various documents
- the disciplinary points system
- which vehicle categories fall under group B (class 3, 4, 5 and 7)
- the MOT inspection manual for cars and passenger vehicles
You must have a paper or digital record of your training for this year.
