This guidance was withdrawn on

On 1 October 2021, responsibility for the management of the National Disease Registration Service (NDRS) transferred from Public Health England (PHE) to NHS Digital. The information on this page is no longer in use. Please go to NHS Digital NDRS.

As part of the drive to raise awareness of the cancer registry and the benefits brought about by the application and use of patient-level cancer data, the Review of Informed Choice for Cancer Registration under Recommendation 5.1 states that:

“All organisations using cancer registry data should credit the registry in public communications and sign-post to further information.

“This should include occasions when:

  • NHS England and other organisations deliver products that are underpinned by cancer registry data, for example, the cancer dashboard and national cancer statistics.
  • cancer charities use cancer registry statistics or analysis in published research, media stories or cancer intelligence tools”

Additionally, Public Health England (PHE) should also clearly acknowledge its use of registry data in all its outputs.

This document provides guidance for staff and stakeholders about how and when to acknowledge the use of cancer registry patient-level data.

Data use acknowledgement statement

The following statement has been agreed by PHE’s National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service (NCRAS) and approved by the PHE Independent Advisory Panel for Data Release (December 2019) as the appropriate and relevant wording to be used to acknowledge the use of patient-level cancer registration data and is to be used with immediate effect:

“This work uses data that has been provided by patients and collected by the NHS as part of their care and support. The data are collated, maintained and quality assured by the National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service, which is part of Public Health England (PHE).”

“This work includes patient data collated by the National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service (NCRAS).”
