Details

The National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is the lead civil nuclear laboratory for the UK and a critical asset to the government and the nuclear sector. The work it delivers is essential for the government’s renewed nuclear ambition.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has undertaken a strategic review to reassess NNL’s role within the UK’s nuclear landscape and identify how it can be empowered to take forward programmes of national significance, supporting government and serving the nation.

The Review sets out a bold vision of transformation for NNL, redefining its mission, role and branding to:

United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory (UKNNL) is government’s nuclear lead civil fission laboratory whose mission is twofold: to enable and deliver nuclear outcomes for government, and to support growth of the UK nuclear sector.

The review’s recommendations signal the initial steps in a decade long programme of change that will enable UKNNL to embody its role, deliver its mission and underpin the regeneration of our nuclear sector. DESNZ will work in close partnership with UKNNL ensuring alignment with government’s national policies and priorities and supporting the strengthening of strategic relationships with organisations, providing opportunities for improved delivery across the sector.
