In 2016, 2 projects took place to look at how we might modernise data collection for the 7-day travel diary aspect of the NTS.

The first project involved the development of an online version of the current 7-day paper diary to test whether travel diary data could be collected using an online version of the diary. An online version of the diary was developed by Transport Systems Catapult and user testing was then carried out by NatCen. User testing involved testing the overall layout of the diary and explored participants understanding of each section of the diary through think aloud, observation and probing techniques.

The second project involved a review of potential technologies which could improve or replace the diary element of the NTS. The technologies examined were smartphones, dedicated GPS devices, mobile network data, web based travel diary surveys, social media data with an emphasis on the Twitter platform, and travel smartcards.
