Net zero transatlantic flight fund competition

The Department for Transport, in partnership with Innovate UK, launched this competition to support industry to achieve the first net zero transatlantic flight on an aircraft using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) within one year.

Up to £1 million in funding will be made available from 2022 to 2023 to support the costs of initiative:

  • project management and staffing
  • personnel
  • fuel testing and certification
  • equipment
  • data gathering and research activity
  • marketing and communications

Interested airlines, fuel producers, aircraft or engine manufacturers and fuel suppliers were invited to complete an initial expression of interest (EOI) between 14 May and 15 June 2022 with submissions being used to:

  • help set the programme’s timescales and determine the delivery plan
  • preselect proposals that will progress to the full competition stage

Competition status

The competition process is now complete. Virgin Atlantic have been selected as the winner and will undertake the project to run a transatlantic flight on 100% SAF by the end of 2023. They will be supported by the following partners:

  • Boeing
  • Rolls-Royce
  • Imperial College London
  • University of Sheffield
  • Rocky Mountain Institute
  • ICF
