Published 24 June 2024

Applies to England

Details of the application

The Environment Agency has received an application to vary (change) an environmental permit under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 from Clearwater D C 2001 Limited.

The proposed variation will convert another kind of regulated facility into an installation.

Application number

EPR/FB3708UK/V002

Regulated facility type

Clearwater D C 2001 Limited is an existing permitted waste transfer facility for the reprocessing of activated carbon which has previously been used in filtration systems. The activated carbon has a limited capacity to remove contaminants and after a prescribed usage period the spent activated carbon is exchanged for new or reprocessed material. The Clearwater Corby site is a transfer station for the collection, segregation, sorting and bulking of activated carbon prior to onward shipment to another permitted facility for reprocessing and recovery. Waste can arrive on site in vessels, tankers or bags. This permit variation application is to increase the maximum quantity of hazardous waste that can be sorted on site at any one time due to technical and logistical difficulties with sampling and assessment. There are no changes to EWC codes which will remain as stated in the permit. This variation will now make the site an installation with multiple activities as follows Section 5.3 A(1)(a)(ii) hazardous waste installation-physico-chemical treatment, Section 5.6A(1)(a) Temporary storage of hazardous waste and a waste operation for physical treatment of non-hazardous waste.
