Norfolk Rivers Drainage Board: application made to impound water

Norfolk Rivers Drainage Board has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of the River Lark at Turf Lock, Mildenhall, Suffolk at National Grid Reference TL 70841 74251.

Water will be obstructed or impeded to install a ‘rock ramp’ fish and eel pass within Turf Lock.

Further details are: installed up against the existing weir face, the ‘rock ramp’ fish pass will be 29 metres long and 3.54 metres wide with a 5 percent slope incorporating 29 rows of boulders, at 5 per row maximum and each of approximately 0.5 metre diameter and set approximately 1 metre apart. The fish pass side slopes will be 0.67 metres wide rising at a 1:1 gradient into a 1:40 sloped earth infill to fill the existing ‘old’ lock space on either side of the fish pass. The entire flow of the River Lark at this point will go through the fish pass.

This is a joint project with the Environment Agency to improve fish and eel passage in the River Lark.
