Notarial and document services abroad

Advice on legalising documents, getting married, and registering a birth or death abroad, and information on services available at UK embassies and consulates worldwide.

Select a country from the index to find out which notarial and document services are offered in that country.

If your country or territory is not listed, and for general information, see Documents for British people abroad, which includes details of:

  • legalising documents
  • certifying a copy of a document
  • oaths and affirmations
  • getting married and registering civil partnerships
  • registering births and deaths
  • applying for passports and visas

Notarial services

It’s usually quicker and cheaper to find a local notary (lawyer) to help with notarial services like certifying a copy of a document or administering an oath or affirmation.

In Commonwealth countries, British embassies and high commissions cannot offer any notarial services.

In non-Commonwealth countries, British embassies and consulates can only provide notarial services if a local notary is unable to do it, or local authorities say it must be done at an embassy or consulate. You’ll need to provide evidence of this.
