Introduction

In March 2021, we issued a notice to exporters, asking you to complete a customer survey on ECJU (Export Control Joint Unit) services and what could be improved. With thanks to those who completed the survey.

We heard that you believe ECJU is built on strong foundations, with 88% agreeing that ECJU staff were knowledgeable and acted professionally and 90% agreeing that ECJU was rigorous. The areas for improvement were having digital systems and processes that were easier to navigate, and having more and better communications, particularly on the status of applications.

Work underway

Work is currently underway on these improvements to our services:

  • LITE, the new service for export control licensing applications will replace SPIRE as a modern government digital service. This is currently in private beta and issuing licences. It is being delivered in phases and more users will be invited to join the service

  • over the coming year more functionalities will become available, and more users will be invited to use the system. We are currently working towards a public beta service for all exporters in 2024

  • work has begun on improving information for exporters on the licence application system on GOV.UK

  • over the next 12 months, there will be more guidance on how to apply for licences, what type of licence you need and whether what you are exporting requires a licence. It will also be easier to navigate so accessing this information will be a more streamlined process

Shaping future service improvements

The insights from the review of GOV.UK and the customer survey will shape our priorities for service improvements. We hope to make the customer survey an annual opportunity to gather feedback from exporters.
